BROWN and PINK TOILE BEDDING

I wanted to start this article with the statement that brown and pink toile bedding sets of today are a far cry from the comforters and curtains that were once the staple of old homes and to say that they have been jazzed up which would be an understatement and that’s a fact. But then I made an interesting observation about decorating bedrooms with toile that took all the fun out of what would have been my opening line.

After looking through my stash of vintage home decorating magazines, I can’t help but notice one big difference in the way toile prints were used to decorate bedrooms is that apart from the rare bit of fabric seen pieced in a square of a patchwork quilt, toile bedspreads were not commonly used. At least I didn’t see any in the decorating books that I had on hand and after I gave it some thought I couldn’t recall any brown and pink toile bedding sets in either of my grandparent’s bedrooms or toile bedding of any kind for that matter. There were plenty of toile curtains and more than a few pieces of furniture with toile upholstery, my favorite being a pretty upholstered slipper chair in the bedroom, but no brown and pink toile bedding or comforters.

If memory serves me, the bedding that my great-grandmother preferred was chenille. And that stuff must have worn like iron because after she was gone, my mom used them for years. She washed them regularly and hung them on the clothesline where the sunlight could bleach them in the old fashioned, natural way. And it worked as they stayed snowy white until they became threadbare and she cut them up to use in her crafts projects.

Apparently my mom was pretty savvy as I see plenty of bedding collections that combine strips of chenille with other fabrics to give an otherwise uninteresting and flat comforter set added texture. In fact, a set of brown and pink toile bedding that caught my eye not only had borders of chenille, but strips of pink and brown polka dots and corners decorated with grosgrain ribbon both with polka dots and without. And what about those sassy pink and brown baby bedding sets for girls? If granny was here today, she might raise an eyebrow but somehow I think she’d approve of how we are decorating with toile today.

The second reason is that they are in the preferred Paris bedroom color palette of pink and black with a smattering of aged white thrown in for good measure. The third and perhaps the best reason of all is that our suggested items in bedroom decor perfect for a French theme are CHEAP!

It's a sad fact of life that many moms learn only after buying expensive French bedroom furniture for teens that their teenage girls haven't quite gotten around to appreciating the finer things in life and can't understand why French Provincial decor and nail polish remover don't mix. This is why our French teen bedroom ideas focus either on inexpensive pieces that won't break a mother's heart or decorating with shabby chic furniture and decor that are already distressed to the point that a little more abuse won't make a bit of difference.

We have discovered that the teens and tweens in our decorating experience showed a distinct preference for French bistro decor. Imagine a room decorated in pink French poodles, images of the Eiffel Tower and furniture that might have come from a sidewalk cafe or ice cream shop and you will get an idea of how to decorate a French bistro theme bedroom.

French teen bedroom ideas for this style won't require that you throw out the shabby chic Parisian apartment furnishings and decor. Instead, just dress it up with funky lampshades, drawer pulls and vintage pictures of French poodles and Eiffel Tower posters. If your teenage girl accidentally finds out how little you paid for her French bedroom decor and feels cheated because her bedroom makeover was so cheap, C'est la vie!

Don't leave Tween and Teenage Girls Bedding Sets, French Teen Bedroom Ideas and Decor without taking a look at our many recommendations for decorating in a pink French Poodle theme.

Red is an eye catching, stimulating color. Teenage girls are big fans of red bedding for those reasons. Young ladies tend to lean toward bedroom color schemes that bump the senses into high gear. However, most moms are slightly reticent about their teen girls’ rooms being decorated in such a bold fashion.

When the young girl in your house drifts in one afternoon after school and makes the announcement that she wants a red bedroom the first image that flashes through your mind may be of shocking red satin sheets, shams and comforters. The purpose of this article is to acquaint your with nice bedding in red that’s not so mature in nature so that you can reach a compromise with your daughter (or your mother) that is satisfactory to both parties involved.

RED CHECK BEDDING

Red and white gingham check is a perfect example of red bedding for a girl that is cute and as innocent as a flower in spring. In fact, red girls bedding doesn’t come any sweeter especially when combined with white eyelet or lace trim. No matter how many red bedroom decorations you bring in there’s very little chance that the room will be too sophisticated. Red and white checks are the perfect idea for preteen or tween girls that want a splash of red in their bedroom décor.

RED TOILE BEDDING

If checks are too cutesy, elegant red toile might be an option. This red bedding can be used in a vintage bedroom with dark, stained furniture or combined with black, painted furniture with clean, contemporary lines for a more modern look. This is not the toile that your grandmother used in her formal parlor; the red toile comforter sets of today might be part of a set that combines a bold red and white stripe bed skirt with a red and white polka dot border to perk up the toile and make it fun.

RED ZEBRA BEDDING

Slightly more sexy than our other two suggestions, this option in
red bedding has a more dramatic look that might be off putting to parents of young girls. Red and black, even in oriental bedding sets, has an exotic and mysterious quality that is best left to girls of college age or the bedrooms of adults.

It is entirely possible to decorate a teenage girl’s bedroom with red bedding and decorative accessories that is light and cheerful. Our suggestions should help you to understand that there is no reason to be concerned if your preteen wants a bedroom decorated in red. She is not trying to grow up too fast; she just loves the color red. And couldn’t we all use the warmth and excitement that the color red brings into our homes?

You can come up with some of the coolest decorating ideas for teens and tweens in the world and get shot down by your girl so fast it will make your head swirl! It's a fact, our ideas of perfect teenage decor and our little lady's vision of the coolest bedroom on the block don't always mesh.

Throw those conflicts and the lack of selection in cool comforters and bedding for teens and you're left with one more option: come up with some modern ideas for working with bedding collections that may work for an adult bedroom, but can be converted into bedding for teens with a little imagination and tweaking.

Take the set of black and white toile bedding in the pictures above and show it to your teen. She's not going to think that the decor is very cool at all, my friend. The busy, old fashioned wallpaper might be enough to make a young girl scream that her friends will ridicule her.

However, if you take that same black and white toile comforter and:
  • Add a silky red satin bedskirt
  • Throw some black and red faux fur accent pillows on the duvet cover
  • Paint the wooden bed with glossy black enamel paint
  • Hang a modern black chandelier or add some funky black lamps
  • Consider some oriental black lacquer chests for clothing storage or hard black plastic modular furniture
  • Add black metallic shades as window treatments

You may just change your teen's mind about a black and white toile bedroom design. By changing out the accessories and formal black and white toile window treatments in the picture, you got the elegant French toile comforter that you loved. Compromises will pay off from time to time in the realm of tween bedroom decorating ideas!
