IDEAS for a BLACK and WHITE BEDROOM

Black and white rooms are catching on like crazy and while looking for ideas for a black and white bedroom that I'm working on, I spotted these pictures where the walls had been painted with funky, black and white horizontal stripes.

What a wild look this would be with a set of damask print bedding or a black and white polka dot comforter set! The instructions said that they used a laser level to keep the stripes even, but they don't indicate whether they taped them off or just penciled in the borders of the stripes. I would absolutely have to use painter's tape or I would end up with wavy, uneven stripes.

One of the visitors here suggested some ideas for a black and white bedroom awhile back that included the combination of flat white ceiling paint and black semi-gloss or eggshell wall paint. I think that using that technique to paint these stripes would look very cool!

WHAT COLOR GOES WITH GREEN WALLS

After my post on purple and green bedding yesterday, I was asked what color goes with green walls. The visitor who asked the question did not give me much to work with there, did she? However, I will do my best to answer her question regardless of how little information she gave me by putting the ball back into her court, so to speak, by asking a few questions of my own.

My first question would be whether or not you have chosen your comforter, your curtains or area rug?

The second questions would be what decorative style or bedroom theme do you have in mind? Are you a fan of French, Country, Traditional, Modern or would you prefer something that is breathtakingly bold and original?

It may be difficult for a beginner to understand, but to ask what colour goes with green walls without having made these decisions is to spend hours and perhaps days backtracking and possibly having to return purchases (which is a nightmare even if you didn't pick them up on sale) after you think you have the problem solved.

So, my answer to the teenage girl who asked this question would be to come back with those items in hand (assuming the bedding set she chooses even calls for a green wall paint color) and then we can choose decorations and accessories that are manufactured in the best wall accent colors for her bedroom.

The idea of having pink and lime green as a background for black and white polka dot bedding is enough to make a tween swoon. Bedroom wall paint ideas for black and white polka dot bedding sets may range from painting your own dots to using stickers to make the decor as dotted as you please. But I like the idea of taping off a painted strip at eye level and painting the taped off area in a wild color that will complement the main wall color. I was about to come to the conclusion that if I wanted to decorate the walls in big, bold dots I would have to paint the polka dots on the walls myself. There are pros and cons with this process. The upside would be that you could paint the dots to fit the size of the room which is good in small bedrooms. You could use bright, funky colors but scale them down so they wouldn't overpower the space. The downside is that if you are renting an apartment or implementing your decorating ideas for a girl's dorm room painting is pretty permanent.

The answer to this decorating problem would be to use wall stickers! Reusable and temporary wall decorations have their place in this commitment phobic, mobile world that we live in and I'm crazy for them! Decorate the bedroom walls and if your teen decides she wants to give the furniture arrangment a makeover, so what? Simply peel and stick your decals where they will look the best!

DIAMONDS and STRIPES - A COMBINATION of TWO COOL WALL PAINTING TECHNIQUES

Four walls covered in a bold diamond pattern might be a little bit overpowering even for a sassy teenage girl's bedroom wall decorations, so what's a decorator to do? I would say that if diamonds are to be a girl's BFF (best friend forever) the wall painting technique might benefit from a chair rail. You can use a faux chair rail that's been painted as a break at the right height or if you prefer a 3D effect, you can nail some wooden trim as it's not too expensive. If you want to do something funky and fun, you can hot glue some fake fur, feathers or beaded trim in coordinating colors. Silk flowers at regular intervals can be cool, too. It all depends on your bedroom color scheme or decor.

You can stencil your large wall diamond designs above or below the chair rail and then tone them down with painted stripes below the chair rail. So long as you keep the color combinations similar, you should be in good shape! Here's a cool decorating tip to add a little something special to your diamond pattern; at the tip of each diamond glue or nail in a decorative nail head. You can find lots of burnished silver, brass and gold nailheads to use at your local upholstery shop.
