The Motorola Company has designed the Motorola R0KR ZN50 touch screen Slider as the first phone of its kind to be completely android powered.
Some phones struggle to find a unique selling proposition - something that differentiates it in the market from everything else. The Motorola ROKR E8 is not one of those phones - because the ROKR E8 comes with a very snazzy dynamic keypad that changes depending on which feature you are using.If you are using it as a phone, then the ROKR E8 shows a conventional numeric keypad - if you're using the camera, then it shows camera controls, and for multimedia playback the ROKR E8 shows music keys. Motorola calls this technology ModeShift and in the case of the E8 is is combined with a speed sensitive "FastScroll" navigation wheel, which makes it easy for users to scroll through media libraries or menu options.

ROKR E8 The virtual keypad is enhanced with Motorola's haptics technology - pressing the keys actually does result in some physical reaction, even though they're completely flat and motionless. When switched off, the ROKR E8's keypad is totally blank.
Motorola aren't saying exactly how the ROKR E8's ModeShift keypad works - looking at the positioning of the virtual keys, it does appear to be a logical extension of the fixed hidden controls that we first saw on the LG Chocolate, with each button in a unique position. This makes more sense than the expensive Optimus Maximus approach where everything is an individual active display.

Get past the clever keypad, and the Motorola ROKR E8 turns out to be a pretty capable multimedia phone. It can play back MP3, MIDI, AAC, WMA, WAV, AMR and RealAudio music formats, comes with 2GB of internal memory (expandable to 4GB with a microSD card) and it has a landscape format (wide) 2" 320 x 240 pixel display for video playback. The ROKR E8 can also be used with a variety of wired and wireless headsets and speakers. There's an FM radio too.
Somewhat disappointingly, there's no SDHC support for high-capacity memory cards, the camera is a basic 2 megapixel affair with no autofocus or flash and the ROKR E8 lacks 3G or WiFi. Of all these shortcomings, the memory is probably the most significant - 2GB or 4GB is less than even the Apple iPod Nano.

Motorola say that the ROKR E8 will be available during Q1 2008, although no pricing information is currently available.
Granted, the first two ROKR phones from Motorola were not exactly groundbreaking as they were sub-par phones with poorly thought out music capabilities. With the release of the new ROKR Z6, has things changed? Specifications wise, the Z6 has finally come of age, offering a microSD memory card slot that can hold up to 2GB of music, seamless connectivity with Windows Media Player 10 and 11, support for MP3, WMA, and WMA DRM 10 formats, USB 2.0 and stereo Bluetooth connectivity, a 4-way navigation wheel for easy access to the menu system, and up to 10 hours of battery life when playing music in the airplane mode. The Motorola Z6 will hit stores in Asia before May is over.

The Motorola DEFY is the newest Motorola Android device announced for T-Mobile USA. It sports a 3.7 inch touchscreen, Android 2.1 with MOTOBLUR, and is being advertised as "Lifeproof" by Motorola.

The DEFY gets its name by supposedly defying the elements: it is waterproof, dustproof, and scratch resistant, making it an optimal choice for partiers, field workers, clumsy folks, and anyone who may take their phone into any kind of elements that may normally render it broken. We actually did a test with the DEFY, poured water on it, and it still worked perfectly.

The Motorola DEFY also cmoes with a 5MP camera and the social features found in MOTOBLUR.If you've researched rugged phones before, you'll know they are universally ugly devices. The Sonim series of "indestructible" phones may be able to withstand a bullet, but its Transformers-like chassis is bulky and far from the best fashion accessory for a night out in a fancy restaurant. The Moto Defy bucks this trend, and though its matte plastic body falls short of being absolutely drool-worthy, it is a cool-looking handset nonetheless.

Around the edges of the Defy you'll find six screws, and the battery cover is locked down with a sliding latch. This, apparently, provides enough protection to withstand being submerged in up to one-metre of water, and though you'll probably still want to keep it away from water where possible, it is sufficient to survive rain and, god forbid, being dropped in the dunny. We completely submerged the phone in a glass of water for several minutes while shooting the video review (above) and found the phone to be completely functional afterwards. Interestingly, you can't use the touchscreen underwater. We found that the touchscreen actually responds to water, so there's no chance of taking this phone scuba-diving for some impromptu underwater photography.
Protecting it from the keys in your pocket, the 3.7-inch capacitive touchscreen features Gorilla Glass. The touchscreen is reasonably responsive, though like the Milestone 2, we have noticed that interacting with the Defy can seem a bit sticky at times. The phone will respond to gestures promptly, but animations, like scrolling through the list of installed apps, can appear a bit jerky. Motorola has included a Swype keyboard in the Defy, and while we love this addition, it is yet another example of where the response time of the phone can drop to

But there are other parts of the standard smartphone experience that Motorola does very well. The music player in the Defy is probably the best music application we've used all year. It does the basics well; it plays music loudly, displays album art, has multiple search filters for organising music; but it also adds a couple of really excellent web services. There's TuneWiki, an app that streams album art and the lyrics of the song you are listening to so that you can sing along. It can also show other TuneWiki users on a Google Map so you can discover new music through what they are listening to. Shoutcast is also installed and lets you tap into the vast, seemingly endless world of internet radio. But our favourite part of the player is the YouTube integration. If you feel your music needs a visual component you can launch a YouTube video search of the song and artist you are listening to from the menu and play the clip without leaving the music player.

Cinema lovers will also make good use of the baked-in DLNA media sharing software, identical to the Media Share tools we found on the higher-priced Media Share you can stream videos, photos and music in both directions, plus you can transfer files to and from your phone. This is very handy when you are visiting that friend who happens to have an amazing library of media.

We also found the 5-megapixel camera to be better than your average smartphone shooter. It's paired with a dual-LED photolight and features all of the customisable settings users probably expect in a camera of this calibre, but its the pictures that have really won us over. After taking 50 or more photos, we were pleased to see a majority of those were in focus, and the colour of the scenes to be accurately recreated. With the LED photolight doing well not to overpower the photos, the camera does a fine job even in low-light situations.

The Android landscape's certainly getting crowded, isn't it? We can still vividly remember the days when the T-Mobile G1 was the only game in town, and now here we are -- just two years later -- flush with options covering virtually every market segment from the ultra-high end to the ultra-low and everything in between. One niche market that's usually underserved, though, is the beat-the-crap-out-of-your-phone market. You know who you are: you work hard, you play hard, or you've just got an incurable case of butterfingers -- but whatever the case, you need a phone that you aren't breaking, bricking, melting, freezing, or otherwise destroying every few weeks.

It's not that rugged phones haven't existed, of course. Far from it: Nextel and Motorola practically invented (and thrived off of) the concept, and options like AT&T's Samsung Rugby and Verizon's Casio G'zOne series have been available for some time. By and large, though, it's been a field devoid of smartphones -- and these days, that's just not going to cut it. The kinds of people that need a phone that can take a few knocks don't necessarily want to buy them at the expense of power or capability anymore. On that note, Motorola's new Android-powered Defy for T-Mobile USA (and other carriers abroad) is one of the few to take a shot at elegantly combining environmental resistance with a no-compromise smartphone experience, featuring Blur atop Android 2.1 with a 5 megapixel autofocus cam, LED flash, 800MHz TI OMAP3610 core, and a 3.7-inch 854 x 480 display. In other words, on paper, it's no slouch -- but can it hang? Let's find out.

Motorola has announced its first ever Android Phone called the Motorola CLIQ, soon headed to T-Mobile USA! Running their custom build of Android called Motorola BLUR, the CLIQ aims to consolidate your entire social experience into one, integrated and easy to use experience.

Motorola has revealed a new diamond-studded version of its luxury Aura handset. The Aura is pretty expensive in its standard incarnation, costing a princely £1250 sim-free.

The Aura Diamond Edition, complete with 34 diamonds, a sapphire crystal and made of 18-carat gold, will set you back £3500. Suitably then, you’ll have to head over to Harrods or one of a handful of jewellers if you want to indulge in the massive expenditure the Aura Diamond Edition demands.

However, if you’re after a sensible, feature-packed mobile, we probably wouldn’t recommend it. It’s only got a 2-megapixel camera, and uses a mind-boggling circular screen that measures 480 pixels diameter. Still, if you’re looking for a phone that no one you know has and will get jaws dropping – primarily because of its price – you might want to saunter down to Harrods soon.

And no, it doesn’t have an app store.
